The Windber Fire Department has been providing volunteer fire and rescue services to the community of Windber since its formation in 1899. Our fire district is a mix of urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods with a population of nearly 10,000 people covering over 55 square miles and consisting of Windber Borough, Ogle Township, and Paint Township, all in northern Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

WFD rescue technicians work to extricate two trapped in a pickup truck while assisting Central City FDIn addition to fire suppression and prevention, the Windber Fire Department provides rescue and public services, assistance to emergency medical (EMS) crews, hazardous materials response, and fire police services utilizing two engines (one with rescue equipment), a combination engine/ladder truck, a squad, and a duty officer's vehicle. The WFD annually responds to approximately 350-400 calls for assistance with a 100% VOLUNTEER staff.

The Windber Fire Department places a large emphasis on training and takes great pride in the amount of training that members obtain. This training means the most while operating at incidents. In fact, the department was recognized by the State Fire Commissioner Ed Mann in December 2004 for having at least 75% of our members certified to at least one of the various certification levels in accordance with nationally recognized and sanctioned professional qualifications standards. The Windber Fire Department is dispatched by Somerset County 911 and is identified as Station 611. Our dispatch frequency is 33.700 MHz and our primary operations channel is 154.370 MHz (Windber Fire). Firefighters are notified of calls via paging devices.

The ISO Public Protection Classification Rating for Windber Borough is 5; Paint Township is 6. These ratings are based on a scale of 1 (best) to 10 (worst/virtually no fire protection). Click the link for information about the fire protection insurance rating system.

The object of the Windber Fire Department shall be to assist in the protection and preservation of property and life from and during such fires or other emergencies as may occur in Windber, Paint and Ogle Townships, and vicinity.
